Plans revealed for sports hub with Powys’ only Olympic weightlifting facility

Press Release

A NEW sports facility could soon replace an outdated 1970s changing rooms and gym in Newtown with plans to open in late 2024.

Plans have been revealed to replace the “not fit for purpose” building at The Rec – home of Newtown Rugby Club, Tennis Club and Cricket Club – with a two-storey building which would include new changing rooms, a CrossFit gym with mid Wales’ only Olympic weightlifting facility, and a fully accessible multipurpose upper floor space for indoor sports such as bowls, yoga and softball.

People are being urged to share their views online at https://tinyurl.com/3y5uprnf by Friday (April 21) to find out the level of support for the proposal and identify potential users.

Newtown Rugby Club chairman James Holloway said: “In order to support the whole project, we’re rebranding the town’s sports club which will now be known as Active Newtown to reflect the new strategy for this site which is to be more focussed on giving more people in the community a chance to get involved down at The Rec.”

The proposal has already received the backing of Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies who paid a visit to The Rec last week with Russell George MS and Craig Williams MP to discuss funding opportunities.
